designing a fire spell that can be used to kill enemies but that is primarily intended to keep you warm when it’s cold outside but also if you need to set somebody on fire it can do that too because it’s fire
rhetorical pls do not answer but how do I make it clear that this is not the Murder Spell, it is the I Am Friends With Fire Spell
knowing the danger of it is important but I don’t want it to become like
there’s also another spell that’s more explicitly Murderous Intent and it’s meant to be Only Scary
so the question is, is it even possible to put “can be lethal” into a game piece without that game piece being seen as only a tool of death
like if I was making a Chair
and in the Chair stat block I put “if used as a weapon, does 5 damage per hit”
Does it become impossible to see it as a Chair, if you’re a player
The answer might be in “what happens if you do use it as a weapon”
like for this fire spell
in order to kill people with it you have to send the flames out of yourself
at which point you don’t have the spell anymore, it’s gone, you used it up
but is that Enough
Maybe it needs a “Why someone might prepare this spell” and a “Why you shouldn’t prepare this spell” in the rules
That could worrrk
And it would make the Killing Spell more obviously violent: “Why someone might prepare this spell: to kill someone. There is no other reason.”
and then a note for the fire spell that’s like
“Consider the implications of twisting the flames to murderous intent; they will offer their help if you are in danger, but the flames will remember you if you only ever seek them out in order to cause harm.”
Yeah okay this works
So you cast the spell to do violence and then the flames leave you, and if the flames feel like you’ve abused their trust, they will mark you so that other flames will know not to trust you.
Like the important thing to remember is that the spell is alive and made up of a consciousness (or may consciousnesses) that are aware of your actions.
The Killing Spell wants to kill. The fire spell will kill if it has to, but would really rather not.
Also “spell” is a term of convenience, because “cast a spell” is a phrase a lot of players already know and understand. It’s not perfect, and being aware of that imperfection is maybe an important bit of nuance.
