Twitter Archives

These posts came from old Twitter threads I wrote, which have been preserved here for posterity and for anyone who might have relied on the information they contained.

Some of these threads are messy, or personal. They’re presented here in no particular order.

#QuietMarketing
Okay, so let’s talk about #QuietMarketing, which is what I’m calling those threads I write every now and then that start about one thing but end up being about Mnemonic and usually finish up with a “Go buy my game” thing. First, I don’t follow this process consciously; what you’re about to read is very much a reverse-engineering of the things my brain does naturally. It might be profoundly unhelpful for your needs, or it might help you think about your marketing efforts differently.Read More...
Beyond the Rift 2
Beyond the Rift 2 concepts: you play as another character who was present for the events of the first game, dealing with the recovering world beyond the rift you play as the people of Tower, slowly rebuilding their crumbling world ….maybe both oooh Maybe this time instead of the suits being flavors of story, it’s the face cards, and the suit tells you what kind of event your character is dealing with.Read More...
Beyond the Rift V2
V2 of Beyond the Rift is going to be much more clearly a Rube Goldberg machine, establishing working components before you begin and then watching them fall into place with each card drop. V1 is already basically that, but v2 is gonna be more transparent about it. Each suit represents a “region” of the world beyond the rift, which you’ll be prompted to define in loose terms before you start. Your home is in one of those regions, so you’ll get a taste of region-mapping during character creation.Read More...
BLASTKETBALL
THE YEAR IS 20XX. SOCIETY HAS COLLAPSED. AMONG THE WRECKAGE OF CIVILIZATION, ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE. IT IS THE AGE OF #BLASTKETBALL. So far all I have for this game are distance rules: PIVOT: Your target is close enough to hit them just by shifting your stance in place. DRIBBLE: Your target is close enough you can hit them by moving without giving up THE BALL. PASS: Your target is close enough you can hit them by moving, but you’ll have to give up THE BALL to do it.Read More...
Claiming Whiteness
I want to talk about a Thing here relating to whiteness and how people with light skin claim it for themselves. Whiteness isn’t a race. There is no “white people” in the way that there are Irish people or Italian people or Egyptian people or Nigerian people. Whiteness is a club you get invited to (or not invited to) based on the way you look and the way you speak.Read More...
Combat System
me: i wanna make a cronchy combat game system me: ok so here’s how skills work now and you can use this system to run through a fight without having to do it blow by blow the bonus is that it’s not much different from the Weaver’s Lesson system I wrote weeks ago but this time it’s written in Markdown I have to write the easy version first because the first question of the Combat system is “Why is this not something that can be resolved with a single die roll”Read More...
Cronchy Combat
I accidentally invented a combat system I like where both attacking and defending are satisfying actions for the player to take The players don’t roll, the GM does When a player attacks, they score 1 hit if their attack is successful A player can try to score an additional hit, but if they do, the GM gets to roll a bigger die As a base, the GM rolls a d6, and if the roll is higher than your skill you’re using to attack, a complication occurs based on the difference: 1-2: The next time you use that skill, the GM will roll a bigger die 3-4: You don’t score the hit(s) you wanted 5+: They hit you insteadRead More...
Death and Loss
This is not intended as a subtweet, but I’ve started reframing the loss of a character as “they leave the story” instead of “they die” and it’s really changed my perspective on character death. What if losing hit points wasn’t about “you’re taking injuries” and culminating in “you’ve taken so many injuries that you die” What if it was “Things aren’t going the way you wanted” and culminating in “You realize you can’t do this anymore and you plan to leave”Read More...
FIRE FIRE FIRE
designing a fire spell that can be used to kill enemies but that is primarily intended to keep you warm when it’s cold outside but also if you need to set somebody on fire it can do that too because it’s fire rhetorical pls do not answer but how do I make it clear that this is not the Murder Spell, it is the I Am Friends With Fire SpellRead More...
Fire Spell?
Ooh fuck what if like “I attack with my fire spell” Meant you roll a d6 to see if you hit, and then you roll a Fire Die to see what the fire does Like fire doesn’t do points of damage, fire does degrees of destruction: 1: your target is singed and disoriented 2: your target catches fire and can do nothing but try to put out the flames 3: your target is incinerated 4: your target is transformed into a Flaming EmberlingRead More...
